    POLITICAL CORRECTNESS Lo políticamente correcto nació en los campus de las universidades estadounidenses en la década de los años 80, en un clima más liberal con respecto al multiculturalismo y la enseñanza de las humanidades. Se recomendaba un nuevo código lingüístico en el que no tuvieran cabida los términos que pudieran parecer racistas, sexistas u ofensivos para determinadas minorías sociales y étnicas. Así pues, expresiones como “American Indian” o “Black” fueron sustituidas por “Native American” y “African American” respectivamente. No obstante, ciertas expresiones políticamente correctas -“physically challenged” (“con necesidades físicas especiales”) en lugar de “disabled” (“discapacitado”)- han suscitado polémica por su naturaleza excesivamente eufemística, y el movimiento de lo políticamente correcto ha sido objeto de burlas y críticas por el carácter extremista e intolerante de alguno de sus postulados.
